House of God, Inc.

I’ve lived in this same neighborhood for over seven years, and somehow I just stumbled upon this building this winter.

Black Angels

After a hiatus of eight months from photographing concerts, I returned to the fray again Sunday night for The Black Angels at the 9:30 Club.

I really enjoyed The Black Angels’ first record Passover, so I was looking forward to seeing the translation of their sound for the stage. Their drone rock/Velvets throwback is as close as I’ll ever get to the real deal. Obviously, I wouldn’t expect the Black Angels to live up to seeing Lou Reed rocking a stage with John Cale, no doubt a transcendental combo, but I thought their style and sound was a great fit for a show. The 9:30 Club has done an excellent job at crafting their staging and lighting rigs, which adds the proper aura to really make this performance work.

Of course, dark lights make for a rather challenging photographic environment, but it was great to be back in the mix. I’m really looking forward to covering another show soon.

Contemplation

I recently had a roll of Fuji Velvia RVP 100 developed, which I shot with my favorite camera (yes, even more so than my 5D Mark II) my Yashica Mat 124G.

Here are a few of my favorite shots from this roll:

Cherry Blossoms

As the crowds of tourists become ever more dense, the cherry blossoms also emerge into their peak blossoming stage for a few weeks. Dealing with the crowds around the Tidal Basin can be frustrating, but I’ve always found that it’s worth the hassle if the light and sky are photogenic.

This year has been colder than previous years I can recall, and so the foliage surrounding the cherry blossoms isn’t as full as I’d generally like. That combined with the construction at the Martin Luther King Memorial has obscured some opportunities to make good photographs.

But photography is all about working with what you have, right? While I tried to stay away from the obligatory monument + cherry blossom photos, it is nice to have a few in the ol’ portfolio.

Warhol Museum

This weekend we visited the Andy Warhol Museum while in Pittsburgh. While I honestly don’t know much about him or his life, I’ve always been intrigued by his art (and fascinated by his connection with The Velvet Underground).

Camera portrait

A friend gave me this awesome key chain, and I like it so much I thought I would photograph it “photographing” me.

Cats are crazy

Animals are really fun to make photographs of. They’re even more fun when you can capture a crazy face like this one.

Great Falls, VA

After some significant down time from making photographs, I spent a few hours of a cloudy day at Great Falls, VA. The light was flat, so none of the images turned out great, but I enjoyed this Polaroid, which was taken with TZ-Artistic film from The Impossible Project with an SX-70.

Galileo Sundial

A sundial at the Galileo museum. Note that this sundial was not built by Galileo, but was based upon his research and designs.
